Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert AZ-305 Exam Review

Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert AZ-305 Exam Review

The Azure Solutions Architect Expert is Microsoft’s architect level exam for testing individuals on designing solutions within azure.

This certification falls under Microsoft’s Azure Solutions Architect certification pathway. Usually, candidates who complete this certification will have already undergone their azure administrator associate exam giving them an intermediate level understanding at designing and implementing solutions within azure, undertaking this certification will require the individual to have experience in not only how azure works and its integrations but also how to implement and design a full azure solution for both on premise and cloud environments.

The exam covers a wide range of topics related to azure, this can be from azure dashboard’s, azure networking, azure security to deploying azure resources, the exam also entails testing one’s knowledge on how to put all of these resources together and providing customers with a solution which ultimately is the goal of this exam.

If you’re preparing for this exam, you’re going to want to utilise multiple resources. Microsoft offers multiple aids in this department, they offer the AZ-305 learn certification pathway, Study Guides and Practice exams, alongside being able to enrol in instructor led training.

If you’re on route to taking this certification, be sure to check out the Microsoft certification page to keep up to date with this exam, this exam was last updated on the 22ND of January 2024 so there are items in it that have changed sense I last completed it. The skills measured for this exam can be found on the exam page but in short, your skills are measured over the following.

  • Design Identity, Governance, and Monitoring Solutions (30-35%)
  • Design Data Storage Solutions (25-30%)
  • Design Business Continuity Solutions (15-20%)
  • Design Infrastructure Solutions (25-30%)

My Overall Experience in this Exam

My overall experience based on both my 3 highest and my 1 lower scoring areas was

Over 70% of the exam was based on identity and governance alongside business continuity and data storage leaving the remaining 30% on design infrastructure solutions, this meant that the exam focused highly on business continuity solutions and designing those alongside designing storage solutions and Appling governance risk and compliance to the setup of those resources. Designing infrastructure solutions was an important element of the exam as this tied up all 4 areas together providing the candidate with a full implementation of azure solutioning.

My three highest scoring areas were

  • Design Identity, Governance, and Monitoring Solutions (30-35%)
  • Design Infrastructure Solutions (25-30%)
  • Design Business Continuity Solutions (15-20%)

My lower scoring areas were

  • Design Data Storage Solutions (25-30%)

This led me to believe that the exam was evenly weighed and distributed across all 4 sections which I’m summary means the candidate will need to have a high-level understanding of how azure solutions go together.
